Slow Food Meeting Started to Simmer

An informal group of Local Food Network members met last Thursday, April 17, at First Parish Church hall in Newbury to discuss the desirability and feasibility of establihing a formal Slow Food America chapter in greater Newburyport. Chatting over a locally made veggie foccacia and real Maine root beer, the intiating group set two main ideas into motion.

First — a period of education about Slow Food within the Local Food Network, and within the community generally, would be helpful as we go through spring and into summer. Slow Food as a philosophy and culture is known to some in the community, and that by bringing information and examples of Slow Food activities to a broader audience, we could encourage enthusiasm for the movement locally.

Second — we will plan two or three Slow Food type events this spring and summer. Using a fun and low key approach, we hope to present the opportunity for enjoying delicious home made fare with family and friends in the leisurely spirit of Slow Food.

If you are interested in participating in Slow Food and want to help us figure it all out, just contact us with your questions about Slow Food and we’ll get back to you. And in the mean time to whet your appetite, find out about 60 Minutes’ recent coverage of Alice Waters and the Slow Food movement. For those wanting to learn more, visit the Slow Food’s website.
