What To Do, What to Do?? …. Eating Local Food in Winter

Burpee cherry tomatoesMaybe its the rainy day here in Newburyport, but I realize that we’re coming to the end of summer growing season and figuring out ways to eat local without fresh from the field products. So what can a locavore do? Here are a few ideas: Patronize the winter markets in our region, like Portsmouth, Exeter, and a rumored new market hereabouts. Eat Maine Potatoes, not Idaho bakers. Eat local apples and pears…they keep for a long while in local storage. Choose local meats…like Raymond’s Turkey Farm in Methuen which has a great Turkey Pie, and Tendercrop’s great stuff. Save gas and eat in local restaurants. Chesses from around New England, like Cabots Vermont Sharp Cheddar. Seafood locally harvested. Maple Syrup. And here’s a new idea, buy the wonderful new and game changing Maine grown Tomatoes  and Maine grown jobs. How about growing your own window sill herbs..or better yet how about cherry tomatoes in the new sun room? We can do it if we try.

  • Good tips Ron …

There are also a few CSA’s that offer shares throughout the winter … Heron Pond Farm and Green Meadows Farm are ones I am aware of.

And if I had planned ahead, I could have been preserving some of that wonderful seasonal produce as it was being harvested. Oh well, that’s on my list for next year.

Here’s a link to an organic gardening magazine tip on the 10 best herbs to grow indoors: http://www.organicgardening.com/feature/0,7518,s1-5-71-378,00.html
and if you google windowsill gardening there’s lots of info.
